Just a quick heads up.  I will be on vacation without computer access October 21 – October 24.  Because of this the one page printable schedules and standings will not be updated with the results of this Thursday’s game between the Broncos and the Brownies until sometime on Sunday.  My apologies for any inconveniences this may cause!

The guide is loaded with history, statistics, team highlights, upcoming milestones, and other great football content. I come from a huge family. I’m the youngest of 13 kids (no, seriously!) and sports were always a big part of our daily lives. It was not uncommon for us to get together with cousins and neighbor kids for an impromptu pick-up game of softball or football. Most of us were also active in high school sports – football, wrestling, basketball, track & field – but none of us ever took sports beyond high school. How cool would it have been to have a family member play for a D1 college or professional team? That’s the idea behind Football Weblog’s Adopt-a-Player.

Each year, recruiting services identify the top high school football prospects in the nation. Of course, these highly sought-after gridders inevitably commit to playing with the best college teams in the nation, and some go on to play at the professional level. In Adopt-a-Player, I’ll randomly select one of the top 50 player prospects to call our own and follow his career all along the way. With any luck, we’ll stumble across the next Heisman Trophy winner or, if the football gods really shine on us, a player that will eventually slip on a gold Pro Football Hall of Fame jacket.

As I write this, the 2021 NFL regular season is 83 days away. Sigh. That’s 22.74% of the entire 2021 year. I don’t know about you, but I miss football. To pass the time I decided to make an NFL crossword puzzle of the quarterbacks enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It’s my hope that you will enjoy trying to solve it as much as I enjoyed making it.

A heads up: This puzzle will not be easy! I will be honest with you. I never heard of some of the guys that played in the 1920’s and 30’s. And even the big-name players I remember watching as a kid will probably be foreign to the iGen/Gen Z’ers. But the cool thing is the Pro Football Hall of Fame website provides in-depth biographies of all their inductees. You can learn about each of these famous field generals here.

Click the button below to download and print the puzzle. It’s in PDF format and fits an 8½” x 11″ sheet of paper perfectly.  Good luck and have fun!

In my two most recent posts, I talked about the Dickinson Football Rating System.

In my post Ranking the 32 NFL Teams Using the Dickinson Football Rating System, I wrote:

“According to the Dickinson System, the Bucs are overachievers. Despite advancing to the Super Bowl, they are rated as just the 6th best team in the NFL overall (tied with the Cleveland Browns). You would expect a better rating for a Super Bowl participant.”

In a second post titled Projected Super Bowl Winner According to the Dickinson Football Rating System, I wrote:

“…so it looks like yet another piece of evidence that the favored Kansas City Chiefs will finish the 2020-21 season with a 2nd Super Bowl victory in as many seasons.”

So much for the Dickinson Football Rating System.

Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!  Your victory over the Kansas City Chiefs was a dominant performance!

As always, run to daylight.

Yesterday I pushed out a short little post that projected which team will win Super Bowl LV based on the Dickinson Football Rating System. Today I figured I’d rank the entire league using the Dickinson System. There were a few oddities that jumped out at me.

The first aberration to catch my eye were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to the Dickinson System, the Bucs are overachievers. Despite advancing to the Super Bowl, they are rated as just the 6th best team in the NFL overall (tied with the Cleveland Browns). You would expect a better rating for a Super Bowl participant.

Washington is also a bit quirky. They played their way into the top half of the 2021 player draft (pick #14) despite being rated as the 22nd worst team overall. I guess that’s what happens when a 7-9 record is good enough to be crowned division champions.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Cincinnati Bengals were big underachievers. The Dickinson System had the Bengals rated as the 21st best team in the league. Despite that they ended the regular season with a measly 4-11-1 record. A team rated as well as the Bengals probably should have knocked out two or three more wins.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were also disappointments. The Steelers earned a 20.882 Dickinson Rating – good enough for a solid #3 ranking in the NFL. There’s no way a #3 ranked team should be eliminated in the AFC Wild Card round of the playoffs.

What was the Dickinson Rating for your favorite NFL team? Check out the chart below to find out.

As always, run to daylight!

I was watching College Football 150 the other night.

College Football 150 is a docuseries from ESPN that celebrated college football’s 150th anniversary in 2019.  If you haven’t seen any of these episodes, I would recommend doing so.  The show is well done and very interesting.

In the episode I watched – Bowls, Polls and Champions – they briefly talked about the Dickinson Football Rating System.  The Dickinson System rated teams using a mathematical formula, and was devised by Frank G. Dickinson, an economics professor at the University of Illinois.  The system was used to crown college football’s national champions from 1924 to 1940.  It was the first rating system to gain widespread acceptance by the fans and media before the establishment of the Associated Press poll.

The Dickinson System is quite simple.  It awards 30 points for a win over a strong team, and 20 points for a win over a weak team.  A team is considered “strong” if it sports a win-loss record over .500; a “weak” team is one with a .500 or worse winning percentage.  Defeats are worth half as much as wins, so a team garners 15 points if it loses to a strong team, and 10 points if it loses to a weak team.  Ties are half a win and half a loss, so teams earn 22.5 points for tying a strong team and 15 points for tying a weak team.  Dividing each team’s total by the number of games played results in the final rating.

After learning about the Dickinson System, I thought it would be fun to apply it to the Super Bowl LV entrants – the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – to see which team the system considers to be best. (more…)
