McFarlane action figure

If you haven’t heard of McFarlane Sports Picks, it’s time you got onboard.  McFarlane action figures are among the most realistically portrayed action figures that you can imagine, right down to the tattoos.  Many players are found in multiple configurations – grass and mud stains, throwback uniforms, home and away jerseys, etc.  And the players are shown in realistic positions, such as running in full stride, or pulling in a deep ball.  Best of all, McFarlane figures are incredibly reasonably priced.  Many figures can be purchased for $13 or less.  Does your potential gift recipient play fantasy football?  Ask him who the best player is on his team.  A McFarlane action figure of that player is sure to please.  You can purchase McFarlane sports figures online at www.mcfarlanetoysstore.com.

Connor Barth (left) replaces Brandon McManus (right) for kicking duties with the Broncos

Connor Barth (left) replaces Brandon McManus (right) for kicking duties with the Broncos

If you haven’t heard by now, the Broncos released kicker Brandon McManus on November 25th and signed Connor Barth as a replacement. If you want a solid kicker for your playoff run, Barth would be a great addition to your roster. Football Weblog has Barth ranked as the 8th best kicker to own from now until the end of the season.

If you were a McManus owner and someone else beat you to Barth, a couple of other solid kickers that may be slipping under the radar in your league are Cairo Santos of the Chiefs or “da Bears'” Robbie Gould.  Check out Football Weblog’s kicker cheatsheet page for complete kicker rankings.

At the game with (L to R) my daughter Amy, her friend Jessica, and Jessica’s dad Kevin

I went to the Vikings-Redskins game prior to the Vikes’ bye week.  It was a great time.  Although the temps were cool and the winds a bit chilly, the sun shone brightly, and we were sheltered against a concrete wall, warm and cozy, in the top row of the lower section.  The game itself was terrific too with the lead changing hands six times before my Vikings finally came out on top 19-16.

One thing that stuck in my mind as I looked out across a sea of purple jerseys was the lack of Adrian Peterson jerseys.  If I had looked over the stands a season earlier, at least half the jerseys would have been Peterson’s.  Of course I know the reason for the dearth of number 28 is directly related to Peterson’s recent legal problems, but when NFLShop.com released its list of top 25 selling player jerseys last week, I wondered what other players saw changes in the popularity of their jerseys.

Every football fan enjoys following their favorite teams and seeing how they stand in comparison to the rest of the league.  That’s why newspapers and websites publish weekly standings, so a person can see at a glance which teams are performing best, scoring the most points, and winning the majority of games.

In this post, I’ve published a colorful standings sheet in PDF format, ready to be printed and displayed in your cubicle at work, the side of your refrigerator, or wherever it’s most handy to reference.  (See link below.)  Of course, I’ll be publishing a new printable standings sheet each week as the season moves forward.

I’ve been a Minnesota Vikings fan my entire life, as were all of my buddies in elementary school.  Two of the players on the team back in those days were placekicker Fred “Steady Freddie” Cox and linebacker Jeff Siemon.  I remember one of my friends excitedly telling me one bright and early Monday morning that he’d listened to the Viking’s game on the radio the day before.  “Geez!” he told me, “I couldn’t believe it!  The Vikings were making a player substitution, and the announcer says, ‘Cox goes in, and Siemon comes out’!”

In retrospect, I seriously doubt that a linebacker would be coming off the field for a kicker, but to a 12-year old boy back in 1972, this was top-shelf comedy.  And since we’re on the subject of finding humor in the names of football players, check out the slide show (below).  The wit will be shallow, but it will be sure to put a smile on your face anyway.    🙂
