Post0147_PicIt was a different football landscape when the Green Bay Packers met the Kansas City Chiefs in the first Super Bowl in 1967. Professional football was less popular than baseball, boxing, and even college football. Originally called the “First AFL-NFL Championship Game”, Super Bowl I wasn’t even a sellout. Far from it. In fact, 33,000 tickets went unsold. The game was deemed so unimportant that both networks which broadcast the game – CBS and NBC – reused the game tapes to record soap operas. Footage of Super Bowl I was thought to be lost forever. According to an announcement from the NFL on January 11th, however, that is no longer the case.

The dinner, airing of grievances, feats of strength, and Festivus miracles are all but fond memories as we ring in another year.  Though the holidays are behind us, we still have the best football of the season yet to be played.  Why not celebrate this fact by printing out and hanging up Football Weblog’s January 2016 calendar?  It’s a great way to show you’re a football fan and beats the heck out of a Smileyberg State Bank calendar with a picture of a kitten.

The NFL uses “flexible scheduling” on Sundays in Weeks 11-17. This gives them an opportunity to reschedule games that promise more dramatic interest into primetime television slots. The NFL recently announced the following January 3rd flexible schedule change for week 17:

  • The Minnesota Vikings will play the Green Bay Packers at 8:30 PM ET instead of 1:00 PM ET.

Probably the most painful loss in fantasy football occurs when you drop your first game of the regular season.  The second most painful is a playoff loss that ends your season.  (Don’t ask me why.  You’d think it would be the other way around.)  Regardless, this week was the end of the road for my fantasy team.  I simply needed a nice game from Calvin Johnson to pull out a win, which seemed especially do-able against the porous Saints defense, but it was not to be.  Johnson finished the night with a measly 1 catch, 19 yard performance.  Pffft!  Now might be a good time for me to give one of those one-week games a try…FanDuel, DraftKings, etc.

Despite the poor outing for Johnson, the Lions pulled out a 35-27 win and moved into 3rd place in the NFC North.  Follow along with all the NFL teams as they make their playoff runs with Football Weblog’s Printable Standings.  Displaying the colorful standings is a great way to show you’re an NFL fan!

Two thoughts after last night’s Rams-Bucs game: (1) The “color rush” uniforms looked like the game was being played in pajamas, and (2) Tavon Austin used to be on my fantasy roster, and now that our add/drop deadline has passed, I wish I would have kept him.  I will not be voted ‘Coach of the Year’ in my fantasy football league!

The only change in the standings after the game was the Bucs dropping to 3rd place in the NFC South, now half a game behind the Falcons.

Odell Beckham Jr., you’re kind of ridiculous.  Just sayin’.

Beckham was one of the key players in the Giants 31-24 win last night over the Dolphins with 7 catches for 166 yards and two TDs.  The win keeps the Giants in a first place tie in the NFC East, albeit with a measly 6-7 record.
