How Do the Power Rankings Work?

Power rankings are everywhere. Everyone has an opinion, and every fan has a theory about why their team deserves to be ranked higher. But how do you separate genuine team strength from hype, hot takes, and last Sunday’s emotional roller coaster?

Football Weblog’s NFL Power Rankings take a numbers-based approach, evaluating all 32 teams using eight key performance factors:

  • Wins: Winning games is kind of the point, after all!
  • Losses: Not all teams have mastered the art of winning. Losses count, too.
  • Points Scored: How productive is a team’s offense?
  • Points Allowed: How well does a team keep its opponents off the scoreboard?
  • Team Yardage Gained: Which offenses are metriculating the ball down the field?
  • Team Yardage Allowed: Which defenses are making life difficult for opposing offenses?
  • Strength of Schedule: How tough have a team’s opponents been? Beating a good team can mean more than beating a struggling one.
  • Recency of Performance: How a team has played lately matters. A team heating up at the right time can make a move up the rankings, while one heading in the wrong direction may start sliding.

These eight factors are combined using Football Weblog’s ranking system to produce a weekly ranking of all 32 NFL teams. The goal is to look beyond the win-loss column and evaluate the bigger picture: how teams are performing, how tough their competition has been, and whether they’re trending in the right direction.

The rankings are updated throughout the season, so you can follow the risers, the fallers, and the teams that seem determined to keep their fans reaching for the antacids.
