Footballweblog.com provides the best fantasy football cheatsheets for kickers found anywhere.  That may sound like a brash and open-ended declaration, but in this post, I’ll back up that claim.

After playing fantasy football for years – dating back to 1986 – I’ve been burned time and again by inaccurate kicker cheatsheets.  Whatever means the publishers of these cheatsheets used to come up with their rankings, I’ve always felt they were invariably unreliable.

Until recently, I’d resigned myself to simply accept that kickers are an enigma.  I’ve seen some of the best kickers in the league finish near the bottom of the pack in fantasy scoring.  I’ve also witnessed kickers struggle with accuracy – barely hang on to a roster spot – yet finish among the highest scorers of the season.  From game-to-game, too, the scoring of a kicker seems to carry no logic.  One game, a kicker may hit three field goals and three extra points and finish the game with a handsome 12-point outing.  The next game, that same kicker may only score a couple extra points.  So how does a person make sense of kickers?  This past summer, I decided to try and find out.

Do you love football?  Do you like getting things for free?  Do you enjoy receiving things in the mail?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this post is for you!  I’ll explain how you can get stuff in the mail from your favorite NFL team – all for free!

Each NFL franchise is in business to garner your hard-earned buck.  Fans pay the bills when it comes to NFL football.  So why do NFL teams give out stuff for free?  In a nutshell, it’s a promotional thing.  Whenever we show support of a team, perhaps by displaying posters or banners, we are advertising for that team.  We help generate interest, and ultimately make the franchise more profitable.  One promotional item that NFL teams often give away for free are “fan packs”.

An NFL fan pack is a package that’s typically filled with mostly inexpensive, but oftentimes very cool, little goodies related to the team.  Stickers, trading cards, posters are all examples of what may be included in a fan pack.  Some teams are very generous and will include a bunch of free stuff.  Other teams may be more reserved.  In almost all cases, the items are fun and varied.  It’s a delight to open a fan pack to discover the unique feast of trinkets that a team has enclosed.

Sports teams have an edge when playing at home versus on the road.  It’s an indisputable fact.  Professional handicappers make a living at knowing the odds, and they incorporate home field advantage into their point spreads.  The rule of thumb I’d always heard in NFL football was to count on the offense to score an additional three points when playing at home.  But is that really the case?  I decided to find out for myself.

To solve the question, I pored over the game results from the last 10 years of NFL regular season games – 2003-2012.  When the numbers were crunched, and the smoke had cleared, I found my answer: In the last ten years, NFL teams scored an average of 2.58 more points at home than they do on the road.

As is often the case when researching something like this, more questions arose.  How did each individual NFL team fare when playing at home versus on the road?  Which NFL team enjoyed the greatest home field advantage?  Which NFL team had the worst?  Had any teams actually scored more points on the road than at home?
